I would suggest taking as many cuttings as you possibly can, as long as they are green and not lignifying/becoming woody. Like you've noticed, the kratom tends to bush out nicely and produce more branches anyways. More cuttings means more trees to work with anyways! I'm definitely not qualified to answer this question but most of the videos i have seen basically say to keep cutting them back to encourage bushy growth.
